Greengrass' score is far more melodic and less troubled than his work in "Saving Private Ryan". It uses only two themes, used pretty much continuously in all the scenes in which the main characters are involved. The first theme is a fairly low-key brass ensemble melody that focuses on solo trumpet. The second theme is a much louder, more adventurous melody that focuses on both trumpet and flugelhorn with an occasional saxophone or clarinet thrown in. It has a very jazzy sound that works very well with the nature of the film. The score borrows heavily from jazz, blues, funk and soul music - but not necessarily in its style. Instead, Greengrass borrows the mood created by these genres.The main theme for "Scent Of A Woman" was also recorded by Oscar-winning composer Michael Kamen for his 1993 album "Sanctus" on which it is titled "Al Pacino".
Greengrass gave all the brass instruments to his good friend Sam Lewis who performs likewise on many other scores by Greengrass. All the string sections are played by one man: Colin Farley.
